A Management Information System is an organised system for collecting, processing and distributing data used to support decision making.

Although primarily targeted at management, a Management Information System can support decision making on various levels in an organisation or business. The information produced by the system must be of direct relevance to the organisation, which determines the kind of information to be included in each specific system.

'Distributing data' refers to all aspects of the manner in which information is made available to its users, including the media used (print, computer system, etc.), the method of presentation (text, tables, graphs, etc.) and the list of recipients of the information.

Data are normally processed to be turned into information. A wide range of processes might be involved, ranging from capturing data on computer up to complex analyses of the data.

The data could originate from different sources, such as an existing database or financial records. Data might also be specifically collected for the Management Information System.

Management Information Systems will virtually always be implemented on computer systems.
